Release statement
There’s a cold breeze blowing in and with it comes the much-anticipated follow-up to Familiars' acclaimed 2020 debut, All In Good Time. Their sophomore release, Easy Does It, arrives under the Beaver Moon on November 15th, 2024. Recorded during the Spring Equinox in 2023, Easy Does It was tracked at Gold Standard Recorders with the legendary sideman and esteemed producer Aaron Goldstein (Julianna Riolino, Altameda, Nicolette & The Nobodies).
Inspired by the iconic sound and raw energy of Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Easy Does It captures the band in a more intimate setting. Invoking the experience of being in the same room with them. The album's songs are filled out by the sorrowful sounds of Aaron Goldstein’s(City & Colour, Kathleen Edwards, Bry Webb) pedal steel guitar, and the skillful playing of Thomas Hammerton (Bry Webb, Julianna Riolino, Randy Bachman) on keys.
Easy Does It sounds right at home with the latest releases of their contemporaries, or as a hidden gem found in a vintage record collection.
As with all of Familiars releases, this album is best played loud and often.
Track List & Lyrics
-
Driving for hours, seeing the same old thing.
Fields of yellow, fields of green.
I’m eyeing the time, always checking my speed.
Still a ways ahead of me.
The gas light blinks, I’m on empty.
How far will these fumes get me?
Pull to the side, there ain’t no one around for miles.
So I walk through the night, there ain’t no way I’m falling behind. And I ain’t ever gonna slow down.
-
Any last words there friend?
As the noose was placed around his neck.
He shrugged as he bowed his head.
Always knew he’d hang for what he did.
A small crowd had gathered round to see.
The outlaw strung up from a tree.
Well, some rough rope and the law is what they need.
Just a short drop and this town would be free.
Shoulda checked the weight that old branch could take.
Before he hit the ground, he was on his way.
Kicking up dust, see him run.
From the cracking of those lawman’s guns. -
I am the one that held your gaze.
And I can imagine spending my days.
With you if you feel the way I do.
We wed and each night we laid our heads.
In the home we live in on the coast.
You went out one day while the water was swelling.
Broke past the wake and now you are fading.
Did you see my face while the waves were crashing?
You’re swept away by the great lake’s passion.
I stepped away, to mourn until my final day.
Alone in this place, until I found my way.
Page by page, until I read the words that say.
He walked upon the sea, I think I’ll do the same. -
Up with the sunrise, with chores to be done.
More work than there is time, more bills than funds.
Under the moonlight, with boards in hand.
I lay out a pattern, across the land.
I wake the next morning, with a smile I hide.
Neighbors came calling, telling me where I’d find.
Circles all sprawling, well they came from my mind.
My feet are firmly on the ground, but my head's stuck in the clouds.
Might have lost a field of hay, a good story’s worth more these days. -
You said wear something pretty, I wore something old.
Don't get me wrong I generally like being told.
But this northern harvest has got me occupied.
Take a look at, at what I got inside.
Got it from the guy, with a milky eye.
Told me not to bother, explaining why.
He works the night shift, outside of town.
Best be filling up, and head off with the crown.
What a dummy.
Blueberries and cherries splashing the trees.
Got me shaking like a leaf.
Got me begging please, What my daddy’d do to me if he knew how I high I blew on my booze cruise.
Son you’re gonna listen to me, you could have been wrapped around that tree.
So get your ass and walk real fast, but leave the bottle with me. -
I wandered out into the woods.
Made my way through the haze and fog.
And when I stopped, I knew I stood.
On the land where I’d build a home.
I’ll build it sturdy, build it tall.
And it’ll outlast, outlast you all.
I’ll build it sturdy, I’ll build it tall.
And it’ll outlast, us all.
I fell the trees and clean each log.
One by one I stack 'em up.
With each swing, with each cut.
I’m further from that little hut.
I’ll build it sturdy, build it tall.
And it’ll outlast, outlast you all.
I’ll build it sturdy, I’ll build it tall.
And it’ll outlast, us all.
A shadow is cast on me as I lay.
Covered in dirt, in an early grave.
For the net I cast while out on the bay.
Covered me up, took my life away.
But now they come almost everyday.
To see the castle of white otter lake.
Sturdy.
White Otter Lake. -
Calloused feet flattening the grass as they meet.
The tracks we leave are memories of where we’ve been.
No matter where I’d go, however far I’d lead, you’d follow me.
And at the end of each day, when we were weary, you'd lie by my feet.
Patiently, waiting, if I’d stir you would see.
The golden season is changing.
The golden season is changing. -
Sat around in the fire’s glow.
My back on the ground, and my eyes closed.
Days went by I’ll never know.
That lost time I am now owed.
A slight pause before I come around.
A slight pause, silence no sound.
A slight pause, just holding on.
A slight pause, where had I gone.
